The Twilight Zone: The Graphic Novel Series
“…Ellis’s evenly boxy panel sizing brilliantly breaks way into a chaotic full-page spread when the crowd reaches its fever pitch. This adaptation is a deliciously creepy reworking of the TV classic and offers a timeless slant on this tale. Equally engaging is The Odyssey of Flight 33 illustrated by Robert Grabe, also out this month, with the same wonderful building of suspense that then dissolves into sheer weirdness….Eerily appealing.” –Kirkus Reviews
“….it's occasionally powerful and frequently creepy—if seeing hordes of the dead crawl out of ovens doesn't disturb you, nothing will. The transition to the graphic format is smooth, with a shot/reverse-shot pattern of sweaty close-ups that emulates the feel of the original program. The scope of the imagery is grander than anything Serling could've attained (or even wanted), but for newcomers the sweeping scale will adequately replace TV's inherent claustrophobia.” -Booklist
DIMENSIONS BEHIND THE TWLIGHT ZONE:
A BACKSTAGE TRIBUTE TO TELEVISION'S GROUNDBREAKING SERIES
BY STEWART T. STANYARD
ECW PRESS
Frankly, I'd heard so much praise for Stewart Stanyard's book that I was, for a time, afraid to read it . . . concerned that it might render the one that Carol Serling and I were creating irrelevant. Well, I finally worked up my nerve and I've got great news on both fronts: all the wonderful things I'd been told are true and, better still (at least for myself and Mrs. Serling), Stanyard's treasure trove of information, pictures, and insights is so far removed from what we had always hoped to achieve that the two volumes serve to complement each other rather than in any way cancel the other book out. What we wanted to provide in ROD SERLING AND THE TWILIGHT ZONE: THE OFFICIAL 50TH ANNIVERSARY TRIBUTE (Barricade) was an in-depth analysis of the individual episodes, based on Carol Serling's insight into her husband as a person, that would reveal the essentially autobiographical aspect of the show that has barely been touched on before. Here, in Stanyard's tome, is the ultimate backstage glimpse into what was going on on the set, chock full of incidents and a series of pictures that are, in a word, breathtaking. If you ever wanted to feel that you were there, when it was all happening, this will bring you as close to that sensation as a book possibly can. Stanyard tracked down and interviewed virtually everyone still living who was connected with the great series and, most important, prompted them to speak openly about their experiences as part of Rod Serling's once in a lifetime team. In particular, Del Reisman, associate producer and story editor for some time, provides both anecdotes about Rod Serling himself and memories of the work process that allow us to see and understand how ZONE came together in a way we never have before. The book even contains contracts and memos on the official CBS letterheads, adding to the scrapbook quality that lends this volume its appeal, while Stanyard's opening introductory remarks reveal his absolute understanding of the show. One final nice word: the book has been gorgeously designed, so that the arrangement of images and words on the page make it an enjoyable and rewarding artistic experience in and of itself. Highly recommended!" - D.B.
